spending hiatus: update & thank yous & eye surgery

The past week presented no serious challenges in my spending hiatus, for which I'm ever so grateful. I did get a little shopping-kick out of buying envelopes and other bits of stationery for our thank you cards. But surely that doesn't count, so I experienced a little guilt free pleasure, hurrah!

We printed four different postcards of our favourite wedding portraits and we're getting most of them out by hand delivery, but I'm worried about the rest getting ruined in the mail, hence the last-minute envelopes. And yes, the thank you cards are now quite overdue etiquette-wise, but some guests have theirs already so we're only about 60% late! We're all set to finish them tomorrow night so I can mail the last ones real soon.

On a completely different topic, I have a little poll I'd like to take. Have you or has anyone you know undergone Lasik corrective eye surgery?

BB is very sweetly encouraging me to have it done and today my eye specialist found that I'm actually an ideal candidate for a successful procedure. The only thing is, I'm terribly squeamish and a little bit scared of all things doctor / hospital / operation related. Maybe it has something to do with my Grandfather having died during a routine operation? My mom was only 10 at the time so I never even knew him or anything and I'm sure medical advances have been humongous since then, but I've just always stayed as far away as possible from any unnecessary medical attention. I'd rather leave well enough alone and carry on with my scratchy lenses and sexy red frames than risk a botched op.

So, if you have any knowledge or opinion on the matter, I'd love to hear from you!

I think you should go for the surgery! I would love to go as my contact lenses give me bags under my eyes :( I know people who have had it and they say its amazing! Good luck!!!

I met someone who has had it very recently who would recommend it. The most important thing is that you trust the person who would be doing it. She had her's done by a friend and said she's so pleased with the results. The only downside was night vision in the rain which made driving not ideal. But then glasses have their downsides too! Good luck on whatever you do.

I would love to have eye surgery. Contacts and glasses are a mission.

I have a few friends who have had it done and they said it is life changing :)

I think it's normal to be scared of anything like that. Just say a prayer and I'm sure it will work out fine and for the best! No need to hide those eyes anymore! And apparantly it's benefits is almost instant!

I know people who've had it done and are very pleased. Personally I wouldn't risk an operation unless it was necessary and wouldn't choose to have a laser that near my eye but that is my personal choice. I'd rather wear glasses than go blind but I should think the risks are very low in actuality.

Doooo it!! I had it done about four months ago and I already forget what it was like to wear glasses. I'd do it again in a heartbeat - it was totally worth the money. I'd had glasses and/or contacts since I was 8 years old. In college my eyes flat out rejected contacts so I'd been wearing just glasses for about 7 years. I love being able to see!

I looked into having this done last year - the eye doctor said I was a great candidate, but said that the surgery wouldn't be a 'permanent fix' and that I would most likely have to come in for future enhancements down the road. In the end, I decided that if I would have to do it more than once it wasn't worth it.... But maybe that is because of my eyes & isn't the case for everyone.

Good luck making your decision. Wouldn't it be fabulous to see w/out the aid of contacts/glasses? I hope it works for you!!!

I have only ever heard of one case where the person had problems. Their vision was not corrected and they had to return for two more surgieries.

I wish I could get it, but I am not a candidate as my vision changes so often. I gets better, then worse and so on. Until then I'll stick with my contacts and my sexy red and purple frames. :)

Oh girl, tough call. I've had 8 eye surgeries, and 2 laser surgeries. That being said, I'd never elect to do anything beyond what's medically necessary. If you do it, be sure to get a valium or something beforehand cuz its nerve-wracking for sure. They put that Clockwork Orange gadget in your eye to keep it open, eep.

On the other hand, the idea of being rid of glasses and contacts for life is SO dreamy. I can see how its incredibly tempting and it seems quite safe these days.

Good luck with your decision!

Other than losing your trademark red frames, probably the most important decision you must make is what surgeon to choose. Although I do not perform LASIK, I have created a document for my cataract patients to help them in choosing a surgeon. The article can be viewed by clicking this link: 10 Things You Must Know Before Choosing Your Cataract Surgeon The advice in this document can be applied to choosing any surgeon in any specialty, not just cataract surgeons.

Thanks for all the feedback ladies, and uhm, Doctor? I have surgery scheduled for 11 March, yelp. Seeing someone for a second opinion today, but basically I think I'm going through with it. I have multiple reasons to do it, might post about it closer to the time. I really appreciate every comment and opinion, and considered them all, thank you!

Congrats! It's definitely worth it. My fiance had it done about 2 years ago and didn't regret it for a second. Recovery was fairly quick (each day got easier). The annoying part is that your eyes feel itchy when they're healing. But in the grand scheme of things, that's not bad at all! Plus the technology has improved a lot in recent years.

I have had family members do it too, of all different ages. Good luck!
